Pleasantville is a city located in Marion County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,539.
Pleasantville is located at 41°23'16" North, 93°16'7" West (41.387772, -93.268680).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 km2 (1.2 mi2). 3.0 km2 (1.2 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,539 people, 615 households, and 394 families residing in the city. The population density is 512.3/km2 (1,322.4/mi2). There are 662 housing units at an average density of 220.3/km2 (568.8/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 98.38% White, 0.06% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 615 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.11.
In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $40,000, and the median income for a family is $48,295. Males have a median income of $35,551 versus $25,948 for females. Pleasantville was surveyed and established as a town on August 1, 1849 on land then owned by William Wesley Jordan. Previous to the ownership of Mr. Jordan, the land comprising the original town plot of Pleasantville changed hands for one horse and $30.
A petition for incorporation was filed in District Court on June 11, 1872 with an election subsequently held in which there were 46 votes in favor and 16 votes against.
The completion of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad Line through Pleasantville in 1879 caused an increase in development and Pleasantville became one of the active business centers in Marion County and the principal shipping point between Knoxville and Des Moines.
The earliest population figures available begin in 1900 with 738 residents.
The first school was built in the fall of 1847, and in 1868, the school district joined with the Masonic Lodge in building a three story brick building that remained a school facility until 1992.
